When guests enter the Space Shuttle Atlantis facility at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, they gain a close-up view of one of NASA’s most historic spacecraft. From its maiden voyage to the final mission, Atlantis proved to be a versatile spacefaring platform. During 33 missions, 207 crew members deployed satellites, serviced the Hubble Space Telescope and helped assemble the International Space Station.
The Space Shuttle era was one of superlatives. Everything was bigger than life. The factoids associated with the program are examples of the historic size, capabilities and achievements of the shuttle and the team that made their achievements possible.
On Jan. 8, 2020, NASA astronaut Christina Koch became the first woman from any nation to pass the milestone of 300 days on a single spaceflight. Koch eclipsed the previous record of time in space for a woman, 289 days, on Dec. 28, 2019. NASA’s Peggy Whitson set the mark between Nov. 17, 2016 and Sept. 3, 2017.
